Five river control gates and control system replaced with modern design Sponden Sluice

The original gates were of the "Stoney" roller type, 6.35m span x 3.81m deep, difficulties had been encountered with the gates jamming and breaking lift ropes. The 5 new gates are of the fixed wheel type (4 wheels on each side) with a flexible joint across the centre of each gate. This design was selected to maintain a more predictable load case onto the existing cast iron built in parts.
Qualter Hall were responsible for the complete M & E works including design, supply, installation and commissioning.
